Meteor Orientation 1998


From September to November in 1998, the guidance to observe Leonid Meteor Shower named Meteor Orientation 1998 was held at several sites in Japan.
This Orientation was originally led by AMOTA to Nippon Meteor Society (NMS). And the NMS and related associations operated it or cooperated to the regional Science Museum. Before the expected great activity of Leonids, the right information and knowledge about Leonids itself and how to observe it was required by the public who were interested.
These Orientations are held at totally 24 sites in Japan in this 1998, increased 18 sites compared with in last year 1997.
This type of Meteor Orientation has been continuously held from 1981 by AMOTA still as our contribution to the public. In this year, more visual Orientations with planetarium equipment, photoslide, VTR and CG were held. The Meteor Orientations operated or assisted by AMOTA were as below. Each ( ) means the number of participants.
1. Ibaraki area (34)
Location : Ibaraki Pref. Southern Lifelong Study Center, Tsuchiura

More than 30 number of public were joined, by whom the orientation was well received.
2. Chiba area (80)
Location : Chiba-City Folk Museum, Chiba
Date : 31st October

The exhibition named " The night of Leonids" had been also held from 29th Oct. to 29th November in the same museum and was also assisted by AMOTA.
3. Tokyo Area (200)
Location : Suginami Ward Science Educational Center, Tokyo

The planetarium was so filled to the capacity, that the 2nd Orientation was temporally held.
4. Saitama area-1 (100)
Location : Kawaguchi-City Pupils Culture Center, Kawaguchi

The 2 stages were given to the program. The first stage was the lecture of the expected activity concerning Leonid Meteor Shower in this some years using planetarium equipment, another was the explanation and discussion for the method to observe Leonids.
5. Saitama area-2

The lecture on Leonids was given by Dr. Ko NAGASAWA, the Publicity Section in the National Astronomical Observatory.
6. Yokohama area (240)
Location : Yokohama-City Science Center

300 offers were chosen from the registration offers which includes more than 400. The 2 stages were given to the program as like as Kawaguchi.
7. Atsugui area (50)
Location : Atsugui-City Science Museum for Children, Atsugui

There has been the same Orientation in this 3 years in Atugi. The Meteor Orientation was deeply interested.
8. Nagano area -1 (45)
Location : Ueda Creativity Museum, Ueda

The first Orientation at the out of Tokyo Area by AMOTA. In addition to the sky watching party, the guidance concerning Leonids was held.
